Becoming a Life Long Learner

Cultivating a love for learning in students is the delight of every WCA teacher. Creating new ways to share our passion for history, science, mathematics and grammar is both challenging and rewarding! (And yes, I did just say grammar!) However, a desire to learn has to be accompanied by the commitment to work hard in order for each student to reach his or her God-given potential. The classical and Christian model of education is rigorous; it demands the engaged mind of the student and the time-consuming discipline of the student’s efforts.

Truth is not Ice Cream

In the first issue we spoke about a hurdle that often must be overcome before skeptical friends can begin taking the truth claims of the Bible seriously. This hurdle involved framing the conversation around the idea of worldview instead of religion. As we discussed, even though everyone (in reality) has a religion, some will find the word itself off-putting. Therefore, a better term to use is “worldview” and we discussed at length what that might look like in a conversation.

It seems our “To Do” lists often run our lives. Why is it that we often evaluate the success of our day on what we were able to accomplish that was on the list? This thinking permeates our culture and our children soon catch on. “What do you want to do when you grow up?” we ask them. “What will you do tomorrow? While our children are young, their “to do” list typically includes lessons, sports, school work, recreation, Sunday school and household chores. These are all fine things that can indeed foster responsibility, teamwork and talent. Yet too often we learn to dwell on performance and perhaps forget the “why” of such activities. The Bible is not performance oriented like we often are. It leads us toward character-building, not career-building, on becoming more like Christ, not like our media role models. The biblical “to-do’s” come from God’s directives– our heavenly Father leading his children in a life of faith, obedience and joy.

For the majority of my life I was an ardent atheist. One of the main reasons I now am not, is Christian Apologetics. Apologetics is “the defense of something,” Christian apologetics then, is the defense of the Christian faith. It is providing a thoughtful, reasonable, and persuasive case for the truth claims of Christianity. This practice has largely been lost in our culture.
