Dialectic (Grades 7-9): It has come to my attention that there was a communication breakdown between the Upper and Grammar schools regarding summer reading. At least some of our Dialectic students read The Hiding Place in sixth grade! In that case Dialectic students who have previously read The Hiding Place at WCA do not need to read it again, but should fill out the summer reading packet questions about it. Those students should also complete the rest of the summer reading assignments. I have attached the summer reading assignment packets to this email for ease of reference. Let me know if you have any questions.
Rhetoric (Grades 10-12): While the assigned C.S. Lewis reading That Hideous Strength is an excellent book pervaded with a strong Christian imagination it does contain themes which might be disturbing to some students (There is a disembodied head key to the plans of the evil geniuses and there is a dystopic feel to the book). If you are concerned about your student reading this book please know that we want you to exercise your best wisdom in that regard. Feel free to read the book aloud or along with your student or assign a different book if you feel that is appropriate. Please just have the student submit documentation to that effect with their summer reading packet.
